Eric McCormack's Biography

Birth name
Eric McCormack

Date of birth (location)
18 April 1963, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Height 5' 11"

Eric was born in Toronto and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. With the support of his parents (his father was also an aspiring actor), Eric spent three years at the prestigious Ryerson Theater School in Toronto and the Banff Center for the Arts, and went on to spend five seasons with Canada's Stratford Festival-he graduated 'lead' status in such stage classics as "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Henry V" and "The Three Sisters". Eric then moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he also moved into television and movies and gained a devoted following of fans.

In 1993, McCormack tried his hand at something a little more modern, playing a cop in the syndicated Canadian-produced series Street Justice. The following year, he landed the role of a sinister colonel in the syndicated Lonesome Dove: The Series. It turned out to be a good move both professionally and personally: McCormack met his future wife, assistant director Janet Holden, on the show's Calgary set.

The actor eventually relocated to L.A., where he landed TV movie roles, guest spots and a regular role on ABC's Townies. McCormack also played a villain in the 1998 Eddie Murphy vehicle Holy Man. The actor initially balked when he was offered the role of gay attorney Will Truman on Will & Grace in early 1998 - not, he says, because he was worried about playing a gay man, but because he was leery of becoming pigeonholed. He changed his mind, however, and began starring on the NBC sitcom in the fall of that year.

Eric makes his home in both Vancouver and Los Angeles.
