The man who inspired the X-Philes' fan-phrase "Smart is sexy" had been headed for a Yale Ph.D. before taking a friend's advice to try acting instead. David Duchovny, son of public-school administrator Margaret Duchovny and public relations man/author/playwright Amram (Marty) Ducovny (who spelled the family name without the "h"), now found himself commuting from school to study at New York's famed Actors Studio. First paying gig: a Lowenbrau beer commercial (1987). With the help of actress-girlfriend Maggie Jakobson (who as Maggie Wheeler appeared in the X-Files episode "Born Again"), Duchovny made his movie debut opposite her in Henry Jaglom's low-budget ensemble film New Year's Day (made 1987, released 1989). In Duchovny's first released film, Working Girl (1988), he likewise played a party guest. He later kicked around in West Coast indie films (with a major role in 1991's acclaimed The Rapture), and did a memorable three-episode stint as a cross-dressing FBI agent in ABC's Twin Peaks. Afterward came Duchovny's first signature role: Jake Winters, the narrator/linking-device of Red Shoe Diaries, Showtime's erotic-anthology telefilm (1992) and series. That year Duchovny also did his only network TV-movie, Baby Snatcher. Duchovny has written or co-written a handful of X-Files episodes, starting with "Colony" and "Anasazi" in season two, and he made his directing debut with season six's "The Unnatural." Siblings: Older brother Daniel, a director; younger sister Laurie. Wife: Actress Tea Leoni (May 6, 1997-present). Daughter: Madelaine West Duchovny (b. April 24, 1999), son: Kyd Miller Duchovny (b. June 15 2002).
